Maker's Mark No. 46 French Oaked Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a real treat. It's got a sweet, fruity nose that's easy to breathe in. It's not overwhelming, just pleasant. When you take a sip, it's warm and comforting, with a hint of licorice and caramel. The finish is long, spicy, but not too hot. It's a really nice balance.
Regarding its nose, King often says when we are enjoying a glass together that it takes him right back to the scent of the barrel houses that permeated the air around the distilleries we visited along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. All the richness and fullness of bourbon without any vapory sting.
I've been enjoying bourbon for many years now, and Maker's No. 46 is definitely a standout in my book. It's got a unique flavor profile that's both familiar and surprising. It's the kind of bourbon you can sit down with on a cold winter night and really savor. A great bourbon for a novice to try, its approachable smoothness and lack of bitterness makes for an easy introduction to good bourbons. The spirit is only 94 proof which could draw criticism from some bourbon drinkers, however, its longer, spicy finish delivers a satisfying punch.
Personally, I like it neat and on the rocks and I am less inclined to use it in a cocktail. For an Old Fashioned for example, its flavor profile may not work well with additionally sweetening. Kathy and I tend to like a bolder, spicier whisky for cocktail recipes. One of our local distillers, Barrelhouse 6 on Keuka Lake has created what we consider a top-notch bourbon for Old Fashions. Have a look at their Brothers’ 1910 Bourbon Whiskey if you like a big, bold, herbaceous whisky for cocktails.
There's just something about it. It's smooth, it's flavorful, and it's got a playful kick. It's the kind of bourbon that makes you feel good. Cheers!
